The Background

  • John Martin Ramsay was born April 9, 1930 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. His father was a steelworker and organized the first union at Bethlehem Steel Company. His mother was born in Bluefields, Nicaragua where his parents had been assigned as Moravian missionaries. 

  • Young John gained his social vision from his parents but gave his educational pursuits to agriculture and received his PhD in Population Genetics from Iowa State University. After retirement from Berea College as Director of Recreation Extension, he settled in St. Louis, Missouri.
